Hi, I am Ryan.
And I am Ashley.
We are The Macks.
We grew up in Arizona by way of Minneapolis. Our mother is an artist and creative spirit, so it’s no surprise that we both love imagining and creating. Ashley loved playing fern gully in our backyard and wrote really bad poetry (she even read a poem at her fifth grade Dare graduation about how much she admired her Dare Officer…ya, she was that kid). Ryan — an early adopter of photoshop and web development — use to photoshop Star Wars pictures and build prototype light sabers. One time Ryan stole Ashley’s magical horse and hid it for over a year. She’s still not totally over it.
After growing up (a little) we both attended universities in Arizona (Ryan studied photography and got a B.A. in Studio Art & Art History from the University of Arizona and Ashley got a B.A. in Political Science and Gender Studies from Arizona State University).
After college, Ryan headed to New York City to pursue a career in fine art photography and professional retouching and Ashley went to graduate school in Austin, TX.
As a photographer and a perfectionist, when Ashley sought out a photographer for her own wedding, she became frustrated at her options— only overly traditional portraiture or lackluster photojournalism seemed to be available. She wanted a photographer that captured her and her husband’s personalities and individuality— she wanted the feeling of their ceremony and reception, the joy of their friends and our family, and the uniqueness of all of the details of the day to be elegantly, but creatively captured.
We quickly realized the real problem was that no one was going to do it better than we would. So, we hatched a plan to conceptualize the photos together and Ryan, along with an assistant, would shoot the wedding. When we saw the final product, we knew we had stumbled onto something special that we had to keep doing together.
For several years we partnered from a distance, Ryan based in NYC and Ashley in Austin TX—until we both made the move to the Detroit/Ann Arbor Area.
We love the Detroit Metro area— the people, the history, the spaces— and we feel so blessed to capture people’s most precious moments here.
In the upcoming year, Ashley will be moving to New Orleans, LA — where we will continue to grow our partnership, business, and friendship.
We hope you enjoy poking around our site and new blog. We look forward to sharing the stories and people we encounter along the way with you.
